Working with line. The shape of the ribbon is curvilinear. The "dumb" text forms a base for the stick figure to impale himself upon and is also implied since it continues from one side of the ribbon to the other. I wanted the text "consume" to create the implied shape of the heart but it was more difficult than I thought it would be. More than anything I am sick of seeing support ribbons on cars... since when does a magnetic ribbon support anything? I guess since sept 11th? Thats when I really saw them catch on... I think it makes people feel happy about something... "I put a pink ribbon on my car for breast cancer I did my part, and now I can focus on more important things like the super bowl and my neighbors barking, shitting, dog" I guess in the end tho, its only better for me... just another consumer for me to sell crap to as a graphic designer. As long as people keep following trends like this, I think I can make money off of them.

I have thought about that same thing too. Pay a buck for a Lance bracelet and now you are a good person and can go out and drive your hummer to the grocery store.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't hold it against a dog for shittin, you do it too. Now barking that's a different story.

ReplyDeleteYou make a good point that just buying those magnetic ribbons does not justify anything. But I think they can also be used as a way to remind people of the war and other problems that are going on in the world during their daily lives. Like when you are driving to work or the store you are not neccessarily thinking about breast cancer or the war in Iraq. Seeing that on the back of someones car could at least make you think about those problems. Usually people who are personally affected by whatever they are supporting feel they have a certain connection to what it symbolizes.
ReplyDeleteYou make a good point Kyle. Ideally, they are supossed to make people think, but hasnt it just become more of a trend? Its almost "crystolographic" (I think thats what I mean) With everyone putting 2 or sometimes 3 on their car... and 4 cars ahead of you at the stop light that makes it trivial. Bumper stickers were doing fine at conveying an idea and each their own way... now everyone just get a ribbon shaped magnet that can be taken off if you change your mind and its always SUPPORT ____. So now ... I support Darwinism.
